A Refined Palette: Nourishing a Unique Approach to Color in the Ceramic Process

This summer I am hosting Birdie Boone and Lindsay Rogers for a two-week workshop that is offered through Kutztown University.  This workshop is available for graduate credit and ACT48 credit through the state of Pennsylvania for art educators, when followed by an online component.

July 23 – August 3, 2018:  Studio Intensive Workshop

August 4 – August 17, 2018:  Online Course, ARU 543

Spend two weeks immersed in the ceramics studio and engage with the raw materials of clay and glazes to craft a more confident approach to color in your art work and in your classroom.  In this studio intensive workshop, participants will learn to develop intentional color and surface through the manipulation of ceramic materials as well as commercial clays and glazes.  Our focus will be on articulating our aesthetic intentions and creating a color palette that reflects our emotional and physical perceptions of the world.  During our time together, participants will learn how to formulate and adjust clay body recipes; manipulate glaze recipes for desired effects; perform color runs, line blends and more complicated blends; and experiment with various application methods.

Our two guest artists, Birdie Boone and Lindsay Rogers, will each share insights on creating expressive utilitarian work with an intentional color palette.  The focus of the workshop is on raw materials experimentation, as a precursor to making finished and refined pieces of artwork.  Extensive clay and glaze testing will the backbone of our inquiry, so students can expect to leave the workshop with test bars of personalized clays and glazes, chips of fired raw materials, and a range of tools for further explorations.  Tests will be focused on cone six firings.

The workshop will meet 9:00 am through 5:00 pm, on Mondays through Fridays between July 23rd and August 3rd.  The additional online course is for students interested in getting undergraduate or graduate credits for the Institute.  The online component begins August 4th and ends August 17th.
