this scoopbowl service is currently on view at the smithsonian museum’s renwick gallery as part of the exhibition “this present moment: crafting a better world.”
This exhibition highlights the role that artists play in our world to spark essential conversations, stories of resilience, and methods of activism—showing us a more relational and empathetic world. It centers more expansive definitions and acknowledgments of often-overlooked histories and contributions of women, people of color, and other marginalized communities.
The scoopbowl service is designed to question our contemporary dining habits, which are composed around place settings for the individual diner. It highlights the communal nature of sharing food by directing participants to a center focal point. This piece challenges our assumptions about eating and explores the boundaries of subjectivity and community. The scoopbowl service is designed to shift our perceptual horizons through which we comprehend food as nourishment, and nourishment as relationship. It uses rare earth oxides for color that responds to the lighting of the situation, allowing the piece the same dynamic existence that we experience. these two images show the shift in color.
this present moment will be on display until april 2, 2023. it shows an array of work by some of my heroes working in all craft mediums.
